SISTERS IN ARMS

DIRECTED BY HENRI DE GERLACHE

Sisters in arms?

In the wake of Greta Thunberg, the youth has been fighting for several months to save our planet. Leading the marches, on the front pages of the media as well as on social networks, young women have become, sometimes unintentionally, the key figures of this movement. Who are these women? Why are they so cheered and criticized at the same time?

To better understanding of the commitment of Anuna and Adelaide (Belgium), Luisa (Germany), Lena (France), Leah (Uganda) and Artemisia (Brazil), we decided to follow them, but also to compare their struggle with that of another extraordinary woman who preceded them: Julia Butterfly. Twenty years ago, after spending 738 days on top of a majestic sequoia, this young American activist managed to save a thousand-year-old forest from being cut down.

The film tells the story of the journey of these committed young women, each in their own way, but all driven by a unique energy, these “sisters in arms” tell their doubts and their desire.

Earth revival

WRITTEN BY CYRIL DION & VALÉRIE ROSSELINI. DIRECTED BY THIERRY ROBERT

Earth revival

After the huge success in France of his film “Tomorrow” (César Award, 2016), Cyril Dion brings us his latest ambitious documentary: “Earth Revival”. The situation is more critical than ever, as the COVID pandemic has shown. How did we get to this point? What can we do now? How can we prepare ourselves for the inevitable clash?

Cyril invites us to re- flect as he questions new personalities who are revolutionising regions, countries or practices and showing us the way forward. They are regenerating the land, the oceans, creating the schools of tomorrow or the democracies of the future…

Through this journey, Cyril Dion offers us a new narrative, that of a fairer civilisation that is full of hope.

Ocean’s battle

Since the end of the 19th century, the world’s major naval powers have pioneered increasingly powerful fleets of warships. The oceans have become strategic battlegrounds. These ships have been designed to outperform other warships, resist attack and match the firepower of any formidable enemy. But these Clash of the Titans have rarely been captured on film, and the wrecks of some of these defeated giants can lie hundreds of metres below the surface of the ocean. Yet, luckily, some these steel monsters have been given new life as floating museums or teaching ships and can be found all over the globe. They bear witness to the technological advances of their age, the developments made in naval engineering in the 20th century, and the history of war at sea. These floating superstructures are the forebears of our aircraft carriers, battleships and modern destroyers, which still play an important strategic role in global politics today: the command of the sea.

By retracing the history of these legendary ships, this innovative television series, which features previously unseen archive footage as well as photorealistic 3D models in 4K, will immerse the viewer and take them to the heart of the naval battles that made history.

Wild Farms

A film by Thierry Robert

A revolution is brewing in the countryside.

Farmers are talking to birds, fraternizing with foxes and badgers, playing host to migrating birds, cohabiting with turtles and bats, welcoming weeds as well as all the unwelcome, unnecessary and supposedly harmful ‘nature’. Across France, hybrid communities are slowly taking shape where farmers, domestic life and wildlife interact and negotiate about each other’s daily needs for the greater benefit of all.

By following the daily routines of tree farms for a whole year, this documentary invites us to discover a little-known aspect of biodiversity, via original and sometimes surprising interactions between wild and domestic animals.

So, what is the message behind these contemporary, funny, moving and optimistic animal fables? The premise for a new society based on a new alliance between man and nature!

50 SHADES OF SHARKS

DIRECTED BY ALEXIS BARBIER-BOUVET | DIDIER NOIROT

Sharks private life…

They hunt, gather in groups, have manic feeding frenzies, and violently attack: sharks are often considered as dangerous killing machines, driven by their primal instinct.
To dispel this image, this film intends to break down these preconceived ideas and reveal the lesser, gentler known aspects of the nature of sharks: delicate, timid, ingenious, harmless…. Sometimes clumsy or unlucky, they too are prey and have to defend themselves against attack. Surviving in the ocean is not as easy as you might think, even for a shark!

Thanks to previously unseen 4K footage, filmed by Didier Noirot, the sharks in this documentary reveal their private side, and certain behaviours for the very first time. This immersion in their private world could well change the way we look at sharks forever.

FEAST OF THE KILLER WHALES

DIRECTED BY ALEXIS BARBIER-BOUVET | DIDIER NOIROT

The hope in the Frozen North

Didier Noirot is known as one of the world’s greatest underwater cameramen and has several prestigious awards for his natural history film camerawork.
Over the past 40 years, Didier has been driven by his passion for marine life, but now he’s set himself a new challenge, to film what is perhaps the largest known gathering of marine mammals in the world; hundreds of killer whales in pursuit of shoals of herring. Today, these killer whales are faced with unexpected competition from humpback whales, who began appearing in this Arctic region only a few years ago, driven by a lack of food resources in the Atlantic Ocean, their natural habitat. In the midst of this changing ecosystem, we journey to the heart of the Norwegian fjords, where Didier Noirot’s aim is to take us as close as we can get to these giants of the Arctic so we can witness first-hand their new behaviour and hunting activity, which has never been captured on film before.

700 sharks

Directed by Luc Marescot

Gombessa IV Expedition

Legend has it that the shark is a lone wolf. He hunts alone. Think again. The latest science shows that the shark actually hunts in packs.

In a groundbreaking experiment, five of the most experienced underwater scientists in the world will dive at night among 700 starving sharks, the largest school ever recorded. It took them 3 years of preparation to dare descend among the predators. Their goal is to fit electronic trackers on one hundred squalls to monitor their movement and organization during nocturnal hunting. The challenge is to produce a 3D mapping which will reveal the sharks’ movements, gathering points, attacks and strategies, at a scale that has never been done before.

This study revolutionizes our understanding of the world’s greatest predator.

Dream Islands?

Idyllic, paradisiac, there’s no lack of superlatives to describe the jewels of the Indian Ocean: Mauritius and Rodrigues Islands.

However, the reality is somewhat crueller: Mauritus is damaged by uncontrolled tourist development and is also affected by global warming. Rodrigues, further north, is spared large-scale urban development but the island is getting thirsty! It doesn’t rain anymore and the increasingly violent cyclones are devastating the coastline.

Accompanied by ‘’The man who dances with moray eels’’ and large marine animals, sperm whales, sharks and moray eels, we experience everyday life alongside the locals of these islands who choose to preserve their piece of paradise!

Naturally Curious in Paris

Directed by Olivier Chasle

Nature lovers in Paris

Enthusiastic naturalist, insatiable nature lover, trained biologist, Myriam leads us on a discovery of the nature that lies within arms length of us. Nature accessible to everyone but which remains unexpected.

It’s by following the trace of an animal, emblematic to her native Brittany, the tiny Ouessant sheep, that Myriam finds herself propelled to Paris, right into the very heart of the megapole, where her tiny woolly compatriot has found a totally new form of employment, that of ecological grass cutter.

Forever curious, Myriam decides to get out to meet nature wherever it may be and however unexpected it is. She’s not attracted by the parks and gardens Paris has to offer but more courtyards and balconies, rooftops, sidewalks, abandoned railroad tracks, drains, canals and cemeteries. Paris that’s underground, mysterious or a little more everyday, so long as it’s presented in a fun & surprising way.

Accompanied by her trusty cameraman and aid, Myriam is a surprising professor, who truly rejuvenates the concept of “ naturalist ”.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams

Directed by Werner Herzog

Cave of forgotten dreams

In 1994, a group of scientists discovered a cave in Southern France perfectly preserved for over 20,000 years and containing the earliest known human paintings. Knowing the cultural significance that the Chauvet Cave holds, the French government immediately cut-off all access to it, save a few archaeologists and palaeontologists. But documentary filmmaker, Werner Herzog, has been given limited access, and now we get to go inside, examining beautiful artwork created by our ancient ancestors, around 32,000 years ago. He questions various historians and scientists on what these humans would have been like and tries to build a bridge from the past to the present.

With his 3D cameras, Werner Herzog captured the sheer beauty of these wonders on one of the most majestic sites ever.
